Agroecological agriculture has gained great relevance in Costa Rica in recent years, as more farmers recognize the importance of farming sustainably, respecting nature and promoting biodiversity. These agroecological farmers not only produce healthy, quality food, but are also true stewards of the land and promoters of rural development.
Today, we want to share with you some inspiring stories of agroecological farmers in Costa Rica, who, through their dedication and passion, have managed to root themselves to the land and farm sustainably, respecting natural cycles and promoting environmental conservation.
Don Eliécer Rodríguez of Finca Orgánica San Luis is a prominent example. His farm, located in the fertile lands of the San Luis de Grecia area, is a true agroecological oasis. Don Eliécer, with more than 20 years of experience in organic agriculture, has managed to create a diversified and sustainable production system, where he grows a wide variety of vegetables, medicinal herbs and coffee, mostly.
Its approach is based on the use of organic fertilizers, integrated pest management and soil conservation. Together with their daughter Felicia, they have implemented practices of reusing organic waste and producing inputs from plants and other natural resources in the area, which have turned the farm into a true model of sustainability.

In the high hills of Escazú, we find Don Sergio Calderón who is passionate about agroecological agriculture. On his farm, surrounded by lush vegetation, he grows a wide variety of vegetables. Don Sergio has adopted techniques such as crop rotation, the use of natural fertilizers and water conservation, to ensure sustainable and environmentally friendly production. In addition, he has shared his knowledge and experience with other farmers, thus promoting the dissemination of agroecological practices.
Yashico is a young agroecological entrepreneur who leads the production of healthy foods from the Yamashita brand, together with her mother and family. On their farm, they grow a wide range of organic products, including fruits, vegetables and aromatic plants. Its approach is based on agroecology and fair trade, providing quality foods, many of them are processed that belong to the fermented category, and promotes an equitable relationship with its consumers. The recipes for Yamashita products are family heritage with a little innovation from Yashico and his family, being an example of reconnecting to our roots and adapting at the same time. This family is another example of inspiration for more sustainable and ethical agriculture in food production.
